「デパート」は 英語で

 

よく日本人が間違えるのが
デパートの英語の言い方です。

デパートと言いたい時
depart や department と
間違って言っていませんか?

会話やTOEIC等のテスト、
ビジネスシーンにも役立つ、
次の3つの意味の違いと
使い方を覚えておくと便利です。

a) depart の意味:
出発する、去る、旅立つ、それる。
普通は leave や go away、
または take off の意味で
使うことが多いです。

<例文>
The train is now departing from Platform 2.
2番線から電車が発車します。

This plane will depart shortly.
この飛行機は、まもなく離陸します。

b) department の意味:
1) 会社等の部署、課、
2) 大学等の学部、学科、
3) 政府等の省、局、部、
4) 百貨店の中にある売り場、

*教育省(文部省)
Department of Education

ハンドバッグ売り場、
handbags department

<例文>
I’d like to speak to someone in the sales department.
営業のどなたかとお話したいのですが。

The shoe department is on the 2nd floor.
靴売り場は2階です。

5) 個人の得意分野、専門、責任の範囲。
<例文>
That’s his department.
それは彼の得意分野です。
That’s not my department.
それは私の仕事ではありません。

c) department store の意味:
百貨店、デパート。

<例文>
How many department stores are there in Nagoya?
名古屋にデパートはどの位ありますか?

There’s an amazing rooftop garden at the department store.
そのデパートには素晴らしい屋上庭園があります。
